Teaching with Comprehensible Input: The Why, What & How
These skill-building sessions offer the language educator instruction in the best practices of teaching with Comprehensible Input and the brain research associated with it. The series also includes training in Total Physical Response and Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling. The sessions will address assessment and unit planning, ACTFL proficiency levels and Can-Do statements. A strong emphasis on reflection, practice and coaching will be encouraged to improve implementation. The sessions will address how to build diversity-positive world language classroom with a focus on bias, stereotyping, and tools to address these pitfalls.
3 full days that address best practices related to Comprehensible Input (CI) in the world language classroom.
1 school visit (Sept/Oct 2020): classroom observation (onsite or virtual) + personalized coaching session
Trainers/Coaches: Rachelle Adams (Spanish teacher) & Anna Gilcher, PhD (French teacher)
Sessions include: How to build diversity-positive language classrooms; the philosophy and brain research of teaching with CI; basic instruction in various CI teaching strategies such as Total Physical Response (TPR) and Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS); reading strategies and grammar; incorporating culture; assessment and unit planning; ACTFL proficiency levels and Can-Do statements; and ample personal reflection and practice.

You’ve made the paradigm shift from grammar-based instruction to teaching with comprehensible input, but how can you go deeper? This monthly, job-embedded professional development series will move you forward in your journey as a Second Language Acquisition-focused teacher and will help you deepen your practice. This series emphasizes how to create diversity-responsive/multicultural world language classrooms.
